Wes Covert joined Laner Muchin, Ltd. in 2008 as an associate in the firm’s Employee Benefits Department. Mr. Covert focuses his practice on all aspects of employee benefits law, including defined contribution plans, defined benefit plans, nonqualified deferred compensation plans, executive compensation arrangements, multiemployer plans and welfare benefit plans. Mr. Covert's practice also includes Health Care Reform compliance and the correction of retirement plans through the correction programs available through the IRS' Employee Plans Compliance Resolution System.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Covert served as a student extern with the Chicago Regional Office of the U.S. Department of Labor – Employee Benefits Security Administration reviewing cases under investigation for the delinquent payment of participant contributions to welfare plan trusts.
Mr. Covert is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Illinois Supreme Court.
Mr. Covert is a member of the Employee Benefits Section of the American Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Association. He has been published in the BNA ERISA Compliance & Enforcement Library, the Employee Benefits Committee newsletter of the Illinois State Bar Association and The John Marshall Law School Tax and Employee Benefits Newsletter. He is also a frequent presenter on the topic of Health Care Reform.
In 2008, Mr. Covert earned his LL.M., with honors, in employee benefits from The John Marshall Law School. He received his Juris Doctor Degree from The Ohio State University Michael E. Moritz College of Law in 2003, where he also received a Certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution. While in law school, he worked at the Office of the Ohio Attorney General and also served as a student extern to the Honorable George Smith of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. He graduated from Taylor University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in business administration in 2000.
Mr. Covert was born and raised in West Union, Ohio, and currently resides in Chicago, Illinois with his wife and two daughters.
